Today's plan: a writing vortex.
Although I no longer live in the US, most of the people I work with are stateside—which means I still get to benefit from American holidays. This Thursday and Friday, I'm taking advantage of the email and meeting-free time to enter the "writing vortex," a term used by Jo March in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women.
I have read the classic probably upwards of twenty times. Like many writers, I was inspired by the self-proclaimed "scribbler" sister Jo. Whenever I fall into a writing vortex and emerge hours later, making a bleary-eyed return to the real world, I always think of her and smile. And as I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate this female figure, revolutionary for her time in so many ways, even more. In light of the holiday, I'm taking a moment to be thankful for that bold character—and the many others that have inspired me.
